Joel Picket has been one of the most respected leaders in the New York real estate and construction industry over the past 40 years. Along with Drew Greenwald, he played a critical strategic role in pursuing development of retail projects in underserved markets that led to the construction of Harlem USA and DC USA. Mr. Picket’s stellar reputation and outstanding track record among the lending community facilitated Urban Strategic Partners' access to debt financing for complex projects during challenging economic times for lenders. Mr. Picket is a key part of the Urban Strategic Partners management team and gets involved directly in all financial negotiations as well as in managing all contractor relationships.
Mr. Picket assumed leadership of Gotham in 1965 and oversees the direction of this fourth generation, family-owned firm. Mr. Picket has been responsible for growing Gotham Construction into one of the largest privately held construction contractors in the country, with construction of more than 30,000 residential units in the New York metropolitan area alone. Gotham has consistently appeared in Engineering News-Record’s annual survey of the top 400 contractors in the United States.
Mr. Picket, a graduate of Cornell University, is actively involved in various real estate trade organizations. He is a member of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee of the Real Estate Board of New York, is a former director of the National Housing Conference, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Building Contractors Association. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc.
Mr. Picket’s philanthropic endeavors involve a number of educational, medical and arts institutions. He is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of Continuum Health Partners (parent of St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center) and a member of the Board of Overseers of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Mr. Picket serves on the Advisory Board of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University, Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute, and is a trustee fellow of the Board of Trustees of Fordham University. He is a member of the Lincoln Center Real Estate and Construction Council, a member of the Boards of the New York Philharmonic, the Park Avenue Armory, and the Richard Tucker Music Foundation. An astute history buff, Mr. Picket is also the Vice Chairman of The Foundation for the National Archives in Washington DC.
